I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: for better or for worse, Google Contacts is not a complicated CMS. Its power is in its simplicity, but that also means it lacks many features that businessmen and professional women expect from tools like Hubspot and other similar services.

One thing Google Contacts hasn’t done very well in the past is let you create and modify contacts on the fly, but that’s all changing with today’s Google Workspace update. The tech giant has now added full functionality for creating and editing your relationships to its famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask) sidebar that appears on many Google services!

As you can see in the GIF above, opening the sidebar from Gmail, Google Calendar, etc. will display Google tasks, Keep notes, calendar events, etc. on the right side of the screen. Contacts were almost always callable here too, but only in read-only state.

Now, you can select a contact and tap the pencil icon to start making changes to it. Choosing the blue “Save” button at the bottom right will confirm these changes to your web contacts. Essentially, this is the full web app reduced to a side panel for quick access and nothing else.

This also means that there is a “+ Create Contact” button at the top of the people list where you can easily create a whole new contact card. I’m sure Google has other plans for this in the future and how creating contacts interacts with Gmail, Calendar, and other services, but we’ll have to wait and see.

For now, the rollout of this new feature has already begun, and both quick-release and scheduled-release domain owners in Google Workspace will see it appear over the next two weeks. In addition to everyone with legacy Workspace and G Suite licenses, everyone with a personal Google Account will also have access to creating and editing contacts in the sidebar.

After a series of workspace developments in recent weeks, Google Contacts is getting visual tweaks and more information that’s especially beneficial for people in a company.

The visual change sees contact data open on a full page instead of a pop-up view that still lets you see the list of people in the background. A person’s contact profile is displayed in the upper left with a large name, title/role, division and company view.

Meanwhile, the following information is no longer displayed on a channel. First you get a “Directory Profile” card with email address, phone number and office location, while a “More” button is available. Below this is your ‘chain of management’, starting with a ‘Managers’ chart and a list of ‘Reports’.

The latest new addition is a “history of your relationship with the workspace, including email conversations and meetings.” There’s a new “You and [Them]” feed that shows your recent interactions.

This new Contacts experience is intended to “help Google Workspace users learn more about their colleagues.” It works best if a company’s admins fill in this data from the workplace and company directory.

The updated Google Contacts experience is rolling out to contacts.google.com and to the sidebar that appears in Gmail and other Workspace apps. It starts rolling out today and is “available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers.”
