Hbo Max Rebrand Max – It was recently revealed that the once-beloved streaming platform HBO Max has been rebranded as “Max” in favor of a simpler, more ergonomic platform. Naturally, the unexpected drop was accompanied by considerable animosity.
The change was scoffed by longtime HBO fans, who had already expressed a sense of betrayal after HBO abruptly pulled many titles last year. On Reddit, responses like “Simply Max is an idiot” and “Max sounds just like Cinemax’s streaming service” attest to consumer confusion over the change. While we already know that rebranding can be difficult for people to process, some brands are definitely harder to understand than others.

I recently spoke with Forsman & Bodenfors creative director Sarah Ratinetz about HBO’s recent rebranding. We talked about emotional attachment, and her sweet personal connection to HBO, if content is more important than design.

This feels more like a business decision than a visual identity plan; more of a rebrand than a redesign. Treating HBO as its own entity within the Max platform is an interesting strategy to maintain its stake. We’ll see if it holds up.
Why do you think people are upset about dropping “HBO” from the name? Does this have anything to do with the quality of the brand?
HBO has been the pinnacle of prestige television for the past 50 years. It was a status symbol when I was growing up. It also changed the way people viewed television shows. I think many of us can mark various times in our lives by which HBO shows are playing. I can understand a generation’s emotional attachment to the Internet, its history, and what it represents. Rebranding is a natural time to truly appreciate these connections. Fun fact: My in-laws actually met while working at HBO in the 80s!
What do you think of the brand repurposing the “O” in HBO for the “A” in Max?

All the elements in the new “Max” logo fit together nicely. The new version of “Max” feels more modern than the earlier version, with a rounder letterform. The lowercase “a” leaves room for all kinds of creative decisions. I’m excited to see what the team does with this.
The name Max reflects the company’s business and content goals as it expands its platform offerings. However, it lacks the stickiness of its competitors. “Max” is a suffix and qualifier that we have used in the industry for many years. For all the questions surrounding the rebrand, I think one thing is for sure: it has content. This is the kind of content we pursue relentlessly and is the competitive advantage brands need to thrive and gain new subscribers.
If you were in charge of this rebrand, what would you do for the design? Why?
I think the potential for constructing a Max identity system was and still is. I’m curious if there’s more to come. There is an opportunity to leverage design to communicate the brand’s strategy and content vision, driving unity and cohesion between the Discovery+ and HBO platforms. HBO Max is a popular streaming service whose future has been a bit murky since Warner Bros. Discovery begins planning to merge with Discovery Plus.

However, a recent rebrand has confirmed that the platform is not going away, at least not yet. HBO Max has announced that they will be rebranding to “Max” on May 23, 2023. Naturally, some people were annoyed by the change.
This isn’t the first time HBO Max has made a decision that upset fans. They have previously decided to delete popular series such as “Harry Potter” and “John Wick” in a very short period of time.
Unfortunately, the decision to rebrand was not well received by the community. HBO Max, which was renamed “Max,” is currently facing backlash from disappointed fans on social media platforms like Twitter ( 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ).
This is so stupid. The #HBO brand is iconic. Like Coca-Cola and Nike or Budweiser. So, change the top name on TV to Max. Like really stupid… Source You should have kept the HBO name. A name synonymous with quality. source
Why Did Hbo Max Change To Max? Branding Critics Weigh In
Some thought the new name was boring, generic and uncreative. According to fans, “HBO” associates the platform with high quality and provides credibility.
Users have even called it the dumbest decision they’ve ever made. Some don’t even think it’s necessary since HBO Max is already a successful and well-known brand.
According to The Verge , Warner Bros. Discovery has changed the name of the service to cater to children and families.
While HBO is a popular brand, it’s often associated with edgy and youth-oriented content. This means some parents may be reluctant to let their children use the service.

As part of the rebrand, HBO Max is also changing its color scheme from an elegant purple to a plain blue. This is disappointing (1,2,3) as almost every other streaming service on the market uses this color.
HBO Max has reportedly lost its identity as a result of these changes. Some are calling for the platform to return to its original colorways. However, this is unlikely to happen.
We hope the HBO Max team will listen to the community’s feedback and make decisions accordingly. We will monitor this matter closely and update this story to reflect noteworthy developments.
