The Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro are some of the first smartwatches to support “Watch Unlock,” a long-awaited feature that Google originally debuted with Wear OS 3 as Smart Lock. While the feature isn’t live yet, it has already reached Galaxy Watch5 series models that have been updated to One UI 5 Watch and Wear OS 4.

Last week, Samsung began rolling out Wear OS 4 to the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro, the first major update for the pair. Arriving as the One UI 5 Watch, the update brought various changes to Samsung’s latest generation smartwatches, which it has since replaced with the Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic. Despite publishing an extensive One UI 5 Watch changelog, it turns out Samsung has decided not to mention some new features.

According to Mishaal Rahman, One UI 5 Watch enables “Watch Unlock” for the Galaxy Watch5 series, previously known as “Smart Lock”. Originally, Google introduced Smart Lock during the unveiling of Wear OS 3. However, it now appears that Google is ready to launch the feature, which will let you automatically unlock a paired smartphone but only if you’re wearing your smartwatch. Eventually, Watch Unlock should be compatible with Chromebooks, though it remains to be seen when that will happen.
In other words, the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro will mimic the Apple Watch, which has been able to unlock Macs and iPhones for a few years now. Other Wear OS smartwatches will also support Watch Unlock, including the upcoming Pixel Watch 2. Given that Google has scheduled a Pixel launch event for October 4, we suspect the formal reveal of Watch Unlock is just a few weeks away.

The Korean publication ET News reports that the 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor will not come back into fashion next year with the Galaxy S22 series. ToF sensors were present in recent high-profile releases like the Galaxy S10 5G and S20 Ultra.

However, the company replaced a simple Laser AF system for the launch of the Galaxy Note20 Ultra and found that the change did not have a negative impact on the user experience. So, ToF was out and Laser AF was also there for the launch of the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which will carry over to next year’s S22 series.
According to insiders, Samsung thought about bringing back the ToF sensor after Apple included one on the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. But after some considerations and after examining consumer feedback (users found the Laser system quite good), the company reportedly decided to stick with the simplest configuration.
This will impact Samsung LSI, which introduced its first ToF sensor, the Vizion 33D, a few months ago. The division expected to receive a large order of sensors, which would boost its shipments. Now, ToF sensors are expected to go to smartphone manufacturers in China.
Sony is the market leader in this segment and supplies, among others, sensors for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Without the millions of sensors that would be packed into the next Galaxy S flagship, Samsung LSI will have a hard time challenging Sony’s dominance.

A ToF sensor like a 3D camera: measures the distance to objects to create a depth map (with 0.3 MP resolution in the case of the S20 Ultra). In contrast, laser AF is like a single “pixel,” so it can only help with autofocus. In any case, the depth map is used (among other things) to separate the subject from the background in portraits.
There are other ways to achieve this, of course, and in our review of the S21 Ultra we found subject separation to be great even without the ToF sensor.
